About This Project

kellysmilebwI have been researching my family tree for the past few years. This blog is all about my mother’s side. Most of these people moved westward to Tennessee from Virginia and North and South Carolina, as far as I know, with a few stopping in Barbados before that. Some were among the very first European settlers in the Cumberland Territory, or present-day Tennessee.

Another branch came directly to Tennessee from colonial New England. Most of these families originated in England, with a few coming from Ireland and Scotland. These roots go back to the Mayflower, and the subsequent Great Migration from England to Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

I learned that along with the Irish, Scots-Irish and English roots that I already knew about, I also have French, German, Swiss, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, and even Middle Eastern ancestry, of all things!

This site is a work in progress.  Feel free to email me at kelly@longwaytotennessee.com if you and would like to share information and/or photos. You can see my full family tree at Ancestry or Rootsweb, and look me up on Family Tree DNA if you think we might be cousins.

I posted this information to share, but I would appreciate attribution. Please credit me and link to this website if you republish or repost my research in any way. Thanks.

  1. Hi, Kelly. Do you know if the Elizabeth Hamilton who you describe is the mother of Jane Shaw who married Andrew Patterson? I believe Andrew Patterson became a captain in the U.S. Army and served under Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812. Thanks!
